About the Wyoming Military Department

Our Story

The Wyoming Military Department is the umbrella agency for the Wyoming Army National Guard, the Wyoming Air National Guard and Wyoming Veterans Commission.

Who we are: The Cowboy Guard

It is an honor to serve in The Cowboy Guard. In our formations, we take care of each other in combat, within our state, or across our nation; our people are the priority. We answer our nation’s call to fight and win against any enemy and safeguard our fellow citizens. Therefore, we have two moral responsibilities; preparing The Cowboy Guard to serve as both the Sword and the Shield and caring for our Soldiers, Airmen, Civilians, and Families.

The majority of the WYMD’s employees are federally funded civilian employees, the vast majority of whom wear a military uniform to work. About 1/3 of the employee base are known as Active Guard & Reserve (AGR) Soldiers or Airmen; they are employed as full-time military members by the National Guard. The WYMD also has 250 state-funded civilian employees. We also have federal and state contract employees augmenting our force, mainly in support functions.

Roughly 75 percent of the Wyoming National Guard comprises traditional Soldiers and Airmen. They are part-time military members, wearing a uniform one weekend a month for specific training exercises or when activated to deploy for federal or state service.

We are proud of what our Soldiers, Airmen, and Civilian employees do, and we share their stories on a number of platforms, including this one. Our social media handle is @wyoguard, so look us up, follow us, and interact with us on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Flickr and Instagram.

The Adjutant General is the agency director and oversees day-to-day operations of the agency’s subordinate departments. The Army and Air National Guard commanders, known as an Assistant Adjutant General, ensure National Guard forces excel at their federal and state missions. The Wyoming Military Department’s deputy director oversees the agency’s state employees, budget process and funding.
